Story

It was back in the sixties: I went to Sedalia, MO to play a gig with my friend "Tutty Gatson and the Derbys." On the way back to Kansas City, our car broke down leaving us stranded in the middle of nowhere. I ended up walking and hitchhiking my way home with my Guitar on my back. As I was walking down MO 50 Highway, my feet got so tired I had to sit down and let them rest for a while. After I rested up a little, I started walking again. Finally, an old farmer gave me a ride to Blue Springs, MO which is just a suburb of Kansas City and I caught a city bus and made it back home. This song tells the story about that experience.

Lyrics

Traveling Man

I got forty five miles behind me; I got 45 miles to go.

I got forty five miles behind me; I got 45 miles to go.

When the sun comes up in the morning,

I’ll be walking through my front door.

This road keeps getting longer, but I got to keep moving on.

This road keeps getting longer, but I got to keep moving on.

When I reach my destination,

Lord I wont be back no more.

1st break;

I been walking all night, hitch hiking all day.

Trying to catch the next thing that’s going my way.

I got sixty five miles behind me; I got twenty five miles to go.

I got sixty five miles behind me; I got twenty five miles to go.

When I get home in the morning,

Lord I wont be back no more.

I’ve been walking down this highway and my feet done got tired.

I’ve been walking down this highway and my feet done got tired.

While the sun is shining bright,

I’ll find some shade and rest a while.

2nd Break;

Sometimes it’s good; sometimes it’s bad.

I took a gamble and lost everything I had.

I got ninety miles behind me.

I think it’s time to change.

I got ninety miles behind me.

I think it’s time to change.

‘Cause when I think about it,

I only have myself to blame.

Vamp;

Cause when I think about it,

I only have myself to blame.
